EVYD Technology Hosts Senior Officials from the Ministry of Defence for Executive Exchange on Sovereign AI and AI Governance
BRUNEI, 27 August 2026 – EVYD Technology hosted senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, Brunei Darussalam at its campus on 27 August 2026 for an executive-level exchange on how public- and private-sector capabilities can be aligned to build trusted, nationally relevant artificial intelligence.
The session was structured as a working discussion rather than a showcase. It focused on a question that now sits at the centre of national technology strategy: how to enable innovation and delivery while retaining national oversight, accountability, and public trust. Three themes anchored the afternoon – public-private partnership, sovereign AI, and AI governance.
A shared, near-real-time view of population health data
The programme opened with a tour of the EVYD exhibition floor and a live demonstration of the MOH EIRU dashboard, which brings population-level health data into a single, near-real-time view to support decision-making. The demonstration illustrated a recurring theme in EVYD’s work: health authorities make better decisions when they are working from one structured data picture rather than several fragmented ones.
Officials then joined a lecture delivered by William Lai, Head of Operations, and Perry Pei Yan Ning, Head of Technology at EVYD Technology, followed by an open discussion and exchange of souvenirs.
Public-private partnership: structuring roles and accountability
The exchange considered how government stewardship and private-sector delivery capacity can be combined so that roles, responsibilities, investment, risk, and accountability are defined clearly and hold up over time.
“Partnership only works when the terms are explicit,” said William Lai, Head of Operations at EVYD Technology. “What we discussed was less about technology in the abstract and more about how responsibility, oversight, and delivery are shared in a way that lasts.”
Sovereign AI: national control alongside trusted collaboration
On sovereign AI, the discussion examined the capabilities a nation needs to develop and use AI in line with its own priorities – strategic control over data, infrastructure, models, skills, and critical use cases – while preserving the ability to work with trusted technology and ecosystem partners.
“Sovereign AI is often framed as a choice between control and collaboration. In practice it is neither,” said Perry Pei Yan Ning, Head of Technology at EVYD Technology. “The task is to build the capability to make national decisions about data, infrastructure, and models, while continuing to work with partners who can help deliver at the pace the moment requires.”
AI governance: oversight, transparency, and assurance
On governance, the conversation turned to the mechanisms that underpin responsible adoption: data protection, security, transparency, human oversight, risk management, and ongoing assurance – the conditions under which innovation can proceed without eroding institutional control or public confidence.
The exchange was intended to establish a shared understanding of the strategic opportunities, governance expectations, and potential areas for collaboration, and to help identify the considerations relevant to any future engagement.
